ABSTRACT
Music is influential in multiple aspects of our lives. There is a significant amount of data on its positive influence on memory and cognition. This study explored the impact of musical intervention on mood, energy, state of mind, and memory recall of senior residents with neurodegenerative diseases, aiming to reveal the extent to which music affects these functions. Pre-and post-concert surveys (scored 1-10 with corresponding emojis) were administered to assess changes in mood, energy, and state of mind. The Mini-Cog, a standardized memory recall test with a three-word recall and clock drawing, was performed to evaluate memory. A two-sample t-test was conducted to compare the means of the pre- and post-concert surveys. Results showed a statistical improvement in the average scores for mood, energy, pulse, and memory recall. Music augments memory consolidation and retrieval, and regulates emotions, making it a non-invasive and achievable intervention for people with neurodegenerative diseases.
