ABSTRACT
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder with no known cure that affects 0.32% of the total population. To determine the effectiveness of phytochemical-based adjunctive treatment in managing symptoms of schizophrenia, this study investigated the neuroprotective effects of three herbal extracts: Hemp seed oil, Bacopa monnieri extract, and Ginkgo biloba extract. The concentration of the compound was determined through a cell viability test. 2.0% or less of each compound was used as they exhibited high cytotoxicity when induced at higher concentrations. The ability of each herb extract to restore mitochondrial function and cell morphology was assessed using cell imaging. In addition, the cells that were induced with hydrogen peroxide and Hemp seed oil displayed strong red fluorescence and glia-like cell morphology, resembling the control group. Thus, Hemp seed oil may show great potential to be used as a supplemental intervention when treating schizophrenia.
